Meet the lance water fern! Its scientific name is Austroblechnum lanceolatum, but you might also hear it called Blechnum chambersii. This cool plant is a type of fern from the Blechnaceae family.

You can find this fern growing in places like Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, and Fiji. In New Zealand, people also call it by its Māori names, nini and rereti.

Where It Lives

This fern loves to grow in the southeastern parts of Australia. You can also find it on the islands of Samoa and Fiji.

In New Zealand, it grows on the North Island and in many coastal forests on the South Island.

The lance water fern is also a special home for a moth called Batrachedra litterata. This moth is found only in New Zealand, and it uses the fern as a place to live and grow.
