Auxiliary Force (India) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Auxiliary Force (India) (AFI) was a special military group in British India. It was made up of volunteers who were paid for their service. People from Europe and those of mixed European and Indian heritage (called Anglo-Indians) could join. The AFI started in 1920. It took the place of an older group called the Indian Defence Force (IDF). At the same time, another group called the Indian Territorial Force (ITF) was also created.

What Was the Auxiliary Force (India)?

The AFI was formed in 1920. It was created by a law called the Auxiliary Force Act. This new group replaced the Indian Defence Force (IDF). Many people didn't like the IDF because it forced people to join (this is called conscription).

The AFI was different because it was all about volunteers. People chose to join and serve. It was similar to the Territorial Army in Britain. The AFI was for European and Anglo-Indian members. There was also a group for Indian soldiers called the Indian Territorial Force (ITF). The ITF had British officers and Indian soldiers.

What Kinds of Units Did the AFI Have?

By September 1939, the AFI had many different types of military units across India. These units helped protect different areas and support the main army.

Different Types of AFI Units

The AFI included various kinds of units, such as:

  • Contingents: These were general groups found in many cities like Agra, Bombay, and Madras.
  • Cavalry Regiments: These units used horses. Examples include the Assam Valley Light Horse and the Calcutta Light Horse.
  • Armoured Car Companies: These groups used special armored vehicles.
  • Artillery Brigades and Batteries: These units operated large guns. They were found in places like Calcutta and Madras.
  • Engineer Companies: These units helped with building and repairs, like in Calcutta and Karachi.
  • Signal Companies: These groups handled communications.
  • Railway Battalions: These were special units that protected and helped run the railways. They were very important for moving troops and supplies.
  • Infantry Battalions: These were foot soldiers, like the Allahabad Rifles and the Madras Guards.
  • Machine-Gun Companies: These units specialized in using machine guns.

These units were spread out in many important cities and regions across British India.
