The Promise Plot

The Promise picks up right after the TV show ends. It explores Aang and Katara's new relationship. It also shows Toph's metalbending school and Zuko's challenges as the new Fire Lord. A big problem arises when Fire Nation colonies in the Earth Kingdom refuse to leave. Zuko and the Earth King almost go to war over the city of Yu Dao. Aang must decide how to keep peace, even if it means fighting Zuko.

The Search Plot

The Search follows Zuko's quest to find his mother, Ursa. She left the Fire Nation long ago to protect him. Zuko makes a deal with his sister, Azula, to help him. They travel with Team Avatar to Ursa's hometown. Zuko learns about his mother's past and her first love. Aang meets a spirit called "The Mother of Faces" in the Spirit World. Azula tries to find their mother on her own, leading to more adventures.

The Rift Plot

The Rift focuses on Aang's connection to the Air Nomads and Toph's family. Aang wants to celebrate an old Air Nomad festival. He discovers a factory on sacred Air Nomad land. Toph also reunites with her father, which is complicated. Aang learns about a powerful spirit, General Old Iron, who is angry at a nearby city. Aang must find a way for humans and spirits to live together peacefully. He creates the "Spirits Friendship Festival."

Smoke and Shadow Plot

Smoke and Shadow continues Zuko's story with his mother, Ursa. Mysterious spirits called the Kemurikage appear, saying Zuko must leave the throne. A group called the New Ozai Society also tries to remove Zuko. Children start disappearing in the Fire Nation Capital. Aang and Team Avatar investigate. It is revealed that Azula is behind the Kemurikage. Zuko confronts Azula, who wants him to rule with fear. Aang and the others save the children. Ursa later meets Ozai in his prison cell.

North and South Plot

North and South explores Katara and Sokka's home, the Southern Water Tribe. They return to find their village has grown into a busy city. Their father, Hakoda, is in charge, and a woman from the Northern Water Tribe, Malina, helped a lot. Katara and Sokka find their father kissing Malina. A man named Gilak tries to kidnap them and causes trouble. He claims Malina is only using the South for its resources. Gilak starts a rebellion, but Team Avatar stops him. The Fire Lord and Earth King approve the tribes' full integration.

Imbalance Plot

Imbalance deals with problems between benders and nonbenders at the Earthen Fire Industries. When Team Avatar arrives, they find many arguments between the two groups. Aang and his friends try to solve these conflicts. The tension grows very high, and Aang must find a solution that works for everyone. This comic helps set up many ideas for the later series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, by showing how political issues and new industries begin.
