History of Avenel
Avenel was started in 1901. It was named after the daughter of Captain Demarest. He was the person who founded the village. Before this, the area was known as Demarest on the Hill. Some of the first families to live here were the Demarests, Browns, Clarks, Coopers, Crowells, Douglasses, Edgars, and Thorpes.
Community Life in Avenel
Avenel has a strong community spirit. The Avenel Fire Company #1 celebrated its 100th birthday in 2013. They had a big parade and a picnic for everyone.
Schools in Avenel
There are three public schools in Avenel. These are Avenel Middle School, Avenel Street School #4&5, and Woodbine Avenue School #23.
Special Centers
Avenel is home to the Woodbridge Developmental Center. This is a place that provides care for people with developmental disabilities.

You can find several places of worship in Avenel. These include the First Presbyterian Church, St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, Central Baptist Church, and Fellowship Bible Church.

Sports in Avenel
The Avenel Warriors are a local sports team. They currently play at Gatorade Park. This park will soon be known as Montesinos Complex in Iselin. A new field is being built for the Warriors to play on in the future.

Avenel has good ways for people to travel.
Train Service
The Avenel station offers train service to New York City. You can take an NJ Transit train directly to New York Penn Station. This trip takes about 45 minutes. You can also connect to the PATH train to reach other parts of Manhattan. In 2019, NJ Transit added new weekday stops at the station. Weekend service also started again for the first time since 1985. This was because a new housing area was built near the station.
Bus Service
NJ Transit also provides bus service in Avenel. The 115 bus route connects Avenel to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

Avenel has been home to important businesses.
Past Businesses
Bradco Supply started in Avenel in 1966. It grew to be one of the biggest companies that sold building products in the country. It had over 130 locations in more than 30 states.

Amazon.com has a large building in Avenel. This building is called a fulfillment center. It opened in 2013 and is about 565,400 square feet in size. This is where Amazon stores and ships many products.
