History of the Museum
The Avro Heritage Museum has an interesting story. It grew from a smaller place into the bigger museum you see today.
The First Centre
The very first museum was known as the Avro Heritage Centre. It was located in a building that used to be for staff at Woodford. This centre had five rooms filled with displays and photos. It also had a special archive and a small shop. You could only visit by making an appointment ahead of time. It was open just two days a week.
Building the New Museum
When the Woodford Aerodrome land was sold in 2011, a company called BAE agreed to help. They decided to fund a brand new museum. The old fire station at the aerodrome was chosen for this project. It was going to be much bigger and better than the old centre.
Work on the new museum started in August 2014. The building was designed by special architects. It opened its doors to the public on November 13, 2015. The new Avro Heritage Museum is much larger. It has a big exhibition hall and a gallery. There's also a café, reading rooms, and classrooms for visitors.
The museum keeps over 30,000 items related to aircraft development. This includes a set of cool murals. These murals used to be in the employee restaurant at Woodford.
