History of the Museum
The First Museum: Avro Heritage Centre
The very first museum, called the Avro Heritage Centre, was much smaller. It was in a building where people used to work at Woodford. It had five rooms filled with pictures and displays about Avro planes. There was also a small shop. You could only visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and you had to book your visit ahead of time.
Building the New Avro Heritage Museum
In December 2011, the land where the old airfield was located was sold. As part of this deal, a company called BAE Systems agreed to help build a brand new museum. They decided to turn the old fire station at the airfield into the new Avro Heritage Museum.
Work on the new museum began in August 2014. The museum officially opened its doors on November 13, 2015. The new building is much bigger than the old one. It has a large hall for exhibitions, a gallery, a café, and even rooms for reading and classrooms. It's a great place to explore and learn!
The museum keeps a huge collection of over 30,000 items. These items show how aircraft were developed over time. This collection even includes special paintings that used to be in the employee restaurant at Woodford.
