About Rabbi Avrohom Genachowsky
Rabbi Avrohom Genachowsky was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, on the first day of Rosh Hashanah in 1936. His father was Rabbi Eliyahu Moshe, and his mother was Gitta. His father, Eliyahu Moshe, was also a well-known scholar. He even studied with another famous rabbi, Yaakov Kamenetsky. Later, Rabbi Eliyahu Moshe became one of the first religious members of the Knesset, which is like Israel's parliament.
His Early Life and Studies
When Rabbi Avrohom was just 17 years old, his father published a special edition of the Talmud. The Talmud is a very important book of Jewish law and tradition. A famous rabbi named Avrohom Yeshaya Karelitz allowed his own notes to be included in this book. But there was a condition: Avrohom, who was still a teenager, had to organize all of these notes! This shows how smart and capable he was even at a young age.
Avrohom studied at two important yeshivas: first for a short time at Ponevezh Yeshiva, and then at Slabodka Yeshiva. He became very skilled in specific areas of Jewish law called Choshen Mishpat and Even Ha'ezer. These areas deal with topics like money matters and family laws. His father asked him to take a test given by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel on Choshen Mishpat, and Avrohom got a perfect score of 100!
Family Life and Teaching
Rabbi Avrohom married Rebbetzin Esther. A Rebbetzin is the wife of a rabbi. Esther's step-grandfather was Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld, who was a very respected rabbi from Chebin. Rabbi Weidenfeld was so impressed with Avrohom that he hired him to teach at his yeshiva. Rabbi Avrohom Genachowsky taught there for the rest of his life.
His wife, Esther, was very supportive of his studies and teaching. She allowed him to stay in Jerusalem all week to focus on his work at the yeshiva. He would only return home for Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) and other holidays.
His Writings
Rabbi Avrohom Genachowsky wrote several important religious books, known as sefarim. His first book was called Cheder Horasi. He wrote this book in memory of his mother. His students also gathered some of his new ideas and teachings, called chidushim, and published them in a book titled B'nei Re'eim.
His Passing
In his last few months, Rabbi Avrohom Genachowsky was ill with pancreatic cancer. He passed away on October 11, 2012, at the age of 76, in Jerusalem. About 30,000 people attended his funeral, showing how much he was respected and admired by the community.
