Awigna (also called Awiz-na) was an important Native American village. It belonged to the Tongva people, also known as Gabrieleño. This historic settlement was located in what is now Los Angeles County, California. Today, the site of Awigna is where La Puente High School stands in the San Gabriel Valley.

What Was Awigna?

Awigna was a thriving village for the Tongva people. They were one of the many Native American groups living in California. The Tongva people had a rich culture and history in the Los Angeles Basin.

Awigna and Mission San Gabriel

After Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was built in 1776, it kept records of nearby villages. Awigna was one of 27 villages mentioned in these records. Many people from Awigna joined the mission community. The mission considered Awigna a main village for new members.

The Village Site Today

In 1915, La Puente High School was built. It was constructed right on the land where Awigna once stood. During the building process, many old items from the village were found. These items are called artifacts.

Lost Artifacts

For many years, these artifacts were displayed at the school. They helped people learn about the history of Awigna. However, by 2004, no one knew where these important artifacts were anymore. Their current location remains a mystery.
