Axel Rodrigues de Arruda, known simply as Axel, is a Brazilian football coach and former player. He was born on January 9, 1970. Axel played as a midfielder during his career. As of July 2025, he is the head coach for the Santos under-16 team.

Axel's Journey: From Player to Coach

Axel started his football journey in Santos, Brazil. He played for local youth teams like Portuários and Portuguesa Santista. He then joined the youth team of Santos, a famous Brazilian club.

Playing for Santos FC

Axel made his first team debut for Santos in 1989. He quickly became a key player in the midfield. For two years, he played alongside César Sampaio, forming a strong partnership.

Moving to São Paulo FC and Beyond

In 1994, Axel moved to São Paulo, another big club in Brazil. He played regularly in his first season there. Later, he went on loan to Sevilla in Spain in 1997. After returning to Brazil, he also played for clubs like Bahia and Atlético Paranaense.

In 2001, Axel joined Sport Recife. He then had a short time playing in Japan for Cerezo Osaka in 2003. He continued his career playing for several Brazilian clubs, including Portuguesa Santista, Paraná, and Figueirense.

Returning to Football After Retirement

Axel announced his retirement from professional football in 2008. He then focused on playing showbol, a type of indoor football. He was even named the best player in showbol for two years in a row! His great performances in showbol led him to return to professional football in 2009 with Jabaquara.

Playing for Brazil

Axel also had the honor of playing for the Brazilian national team. He made his debut on September 23, 1992. He started in a friendly match where Brazil won 4–2 against Costa Rica.

Axel's Coaching Career

After his playing days, Axel started a new chapter as a coach. He began by working with youth teams at Jabaquara.

First Steps as a Head Coach

Axel became the head coach of Jabaquara's first team in 2013. After that, he worked as an assistant coach for the Brazilian national under-17 team. This gave him experience coaching young, talented players.

Coaching Various Clubs

Axel returned to Jabaquara as head coach in 2015. In 2016, he took charge of Taboão da Serra. He helped them get promoted to a higher league, the Campeonato Paulista Série A3. He also coached Portuguesa Santista in 2020.

In 2021, Axel became an assistant coach at São Caetano. He later became the interim head coach there in 2022. He returned to São Caetano as head coach in 2023.

Back to Santos FC

In October 2024, Axel returned to his former club, Santos. He started working as an interim head coach for the under-16 team. He also helped as an assistant coach for the under-20 team. In April 2025, he became an assistant coach for the Santos first team, working with his former teammate César Sampaio.

Axel's Personal Life

Axel has five children.
