Carlos César Sampaio Campos (born March 31, 1968), known as César Sampaio, is a famous Brazilian football player and coach. He played as a defensive midfielder, a position where players help protect the defense and also start attacks. César Sampaio is currently an assistant coach for the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A club Santos.

Playing Career: A Football Journey
César Sampaio grew up in Jabaquara, a part of São Paulo. He started his football journey at a young age.
Early Days at Santos FC
In 1983, when he was just a teenager, César Sampaio joined the youth team of Santos. He quickly showed his talent. By 1986, he made his debut with the main team. He soon became a regular player for Santos.
Success with Palmeiras
In 1991, César Sampaio moved to Palmeiras. This was a big step in his career. He became a key player for the team. During his time there, he helped Palmeiras win many important titles.
Playing in Japan and Return to Brazil
In 1995, César Sampaio decided to play football in Japan. He joined J1 League team Yokohama Flügels. He played there for several years. In 1999, he returned to Palmeiras. He was even the captain when the club won the 1999 Copa Libertadores, a huge South American club championship.
Later Clubs and Retirement
After his second time at Palmeiras, César Sampaio played for a Spanish team, Deportivo de La Coruña. He faced some injuries there. He then returned to Brazil to play for Corinthians. He also played for other Japanese clubs like Kashiwa Reysol and Sanfrecce Hiroshima. He finished his playing career at São Paulo FC in December 2004, when he was 36 years old.

Copa América and Confederations Cup
He joined the Brazilian national team for the Copa América in 1993 and 1995. Brazil finished as runners-up in 1995. He was a key part of the Brazilian squad that won both the Copa América and the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1997. These were major victories for Brazil.
1998 FIFA World Cup Highlights
César Sampaio played for Brazil in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He played in six matches as Brazil reached the final. They lost to France, the host country. He is remembered for scoring the very first goal of that tournament. It was a header from a corner kick in Brazil's opening match against Scotland. He also scored two goals in Brazil's 4–1 win against Chile in the Round of 16.
He is also remembered for helping his teammate Ronaldo before the 1998 World Cup final.

Assistant Coach for Brazil and Flamengo
In December 2019, César Sampaio joined Tite's coaching staff for the Brazil national team as an assistant. He was part of the coaching team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He left the national team with Tite in late 2022. In October 2023, he became Tite's assistant again, this time at Flamengo.
Return to Santos as Coach
On January 4, 2025, César Sampaio returned to his first club, Santos, as a permanent assistant coach. On April 14, 2025, he was named the interim head coach of Santos. In his first game as interim coach, his team won 2–0 against Atlético Mineiro.
