Axel Revold first started studying engineering in 1906. But he soon realized his true passion was art. He also took evening classes at an art school in Kristiania (now Oslo).
In 1908, he stopped his engineering studies. He moved to Paris, France, to study art. There, he learned from the famous artist Henri Matisse for two years. He also found inspiration from other great painters like Paul Cézanne.

Teaching and Secret Academy
From 1925 to 1946, Revold was a professor. He taught art at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts. This was a very important role.
During World War II, Norway was occupied by Nazi Germany. In 1941, Revold and another professor, Jean Heiberg, had to leave the academy. But they didn't stop teaching! They secretly ran an undercover art school in Oslo.
Their secret school was nicknamed "The Factory" (Fabrikken). This was because it first started in a closed corset factory. Later, they moved to other secret locations. This showed their dedication to art, even in difficult times.
