Aya Matsuura's Music Journey
Starting Her Career: Hello! Project (2000–2009)
Aya Matsuura began her music career in 2000. She joined an audition for a group called Morning Musume and was chosen. This led her to become part of a bigger music project known as Hello! Project.
After joining, Matsuura started her solo singing career. She quickly became one of the most popular artists in Hello! Project.
Besides singing alone, Matsuura, who was also called Ayaya, worked with other singers from Hello! Project. She was part of special groups like Gomattou with Maki Goto and Miki Fujimoto. She also sang with Maki Goto and Natsumi Abe in Nochiura Natsumi. Another group she joined was DEF.DIVA with Maki Goto, Natsumi Abe, and Rika Ishikawa.
Aya also took part in the "Folk Song" series. In these, she sang with Yuko Nakazawa and other Hello! Project artists. She was also in special "shuffle groups" like 3nin Matsuri in 2001, Odoru 11 in 2002, Salt5 in 2003, and the larger H.P. All Stars in 2004.
In September 2006, she formed a duo called GAM with Miki Fujimoto. Their first song, "Thanks!", was very popular and reached number 2 on the music charts.
Matsuura also acted in a Japanese movie called Yo-Yo Girl Cop. It came out on September 30, 2006, and she starred alongside Rika Ishikawa.
In October 2006, Aya had to cancel some concerts because she was not feeling well. It was later shared that she had some health issues affecting her jaw. She apologized to her fans and wanted to get back to singing as soon as she could. She slowly returned to her radio show and singing.
On March 8, 2008, Matsuura was a surprise guest at the opening of the Special Olympics Japan Winter National Games. She sang her song "Kizuna". This song was later released as her 20th single.
Changes and Break (2008–2013)
On October 19, 2008, it was announced that Matsuura would leave Hello! Project. Before she left, she released her fifth album, Omoi Afurete, in January 2009. Her 21st single, "Chocolate Damashii", came out in February for Valentine's Day.
Aya Matsuura officially left Hello! Project on March 31, 2009. A few months later, in August 2009, she started her own blog called Ayablog. She announced that her Omoi Afurete tour would be her last for a couple of years. However, she did release a cover album called Click You, Link Me in 2010.
In 2011, it was shared that she had a health condition that limited her concert activities. Despite this, from 2009 to 2013, she continued to release "Aya Matsuura's Maniac Series" of acoustic concerts. At the end of 2013, she performed at a concert called "Hello! Project COUNTDOWN PARTY 2013". There, she announced that she would be taking a break from entertainment for an unknown period.
Returning to Entertainment (2022)
On January 27, 2022, Matsuura appeared as a guest on a podcast. This marked her return to entertainment after nearly ten years. On April 14, she was also featured in a commercial for Nescafe coffee.
Other Appearances
Matsuura has appeared in many commercials for different companies. These include Pretz snacks, Epson printers, and Kirin drinks. She also co-hosted the TV show Utawara with other Japanese celebrities.
Aya Matsuura's Personal Life
