Aygül Özkan was born on August 27, 1971, in Hamburg, Germany. She is a German politician. She belongs to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) political party. Since 2020, she has been a managing director for the German Property Federation (ZIA).
Özkan joined the CDU in 2004. She became a minister in the German state of Lower Saxony. She was the Minister of Social Affairs, Women, Families, Health, and Integration. She held this important role from 2010 to 2013. Aygül Özkan was the first German politician of Turkish background and a Muslim to become a minister.

Aygül Özkan's Early Life and Education
Aygül Özkan's father moved from Ankara, Turkey, to Hamburg, Germany, in the 1960s. He first worked for the German postal service. Later, he started his own business as a tailor in Hamburg.
Aygül Özkan became a German citizen when she was 18 years old. She studied law at the University of Hamburg. In 1998, she became a lawyer.
Aygül Özkan's Political Journey
Aygül Özkan started her political career when she joined the CDU party in 2004. She was appointed as a State Minister in Lower Saxony. Her job was to oversee social affairs, women's issues, families, health, and integration. She served under two different leaders, Christian Wulff and David McAllister. Her term as minister lasted from April 27, 2010, to February 19, 2013.
After the national elections in 2013, she helped in talks to form a new government. These talks were between the Christian Democrats, the Bavarian (CSU), and the Free Democratic Party (FDP). She was part of a group that focused on integration and migration. During this time, she shared her strong belief in a secular policy. This means she thought that government and schools should not favor any religion.
On July 22, 2014, Özkan announced she was leaving politics. She then took a new job on August 1, 2014. She became a general manager at DB Credit Service GmbH in Berlin. This company is part of Deutsche Bank. Before she entered politics, she also worked for Deutsche Telekom and TNT Express. In 2018, she was considered to run for mayor in 2020. However, she decided not to run due to a serious illness.
