Aylesbury is a small place located in the Canterbury region of New Zealand. You can find it nestled between the towns of Rolleston and Kirwee.

Aylesbury and the Big Earthquake

Aylesbury became well-known because of a very strong earthquake that happened nearby. This earthquake, called the Canterbury earthquake, struck on September 4, 2010. It was a powerful event that shook the whole region.

The Earthquake's Starting Point

The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1. This number tells us how strong the earthquake was. The place where the earthquake started deep underground is called the epicentre. For the 2010 Canterbury earthquake, the epicentre was very close to Aylesbury. This means Aylesbury was right near the main action.

What Happened to the Land?

Because the epicentre was so close, Aylesbury saw some of the biggest changes on the land's surface. These changes are called land surface fractures. Imagine cracks appearing in the ground. These were the largest and most noticeable in the area around Aylesbury after the earthquake.
