Aysén (pronounced eye-SEN) is a very large area in Chile. It's known as a "commune," which is like a big local district. Inside Aysén, you'll find the main city, Puerto Aysén, and smaller towns like Villa Mañiguales and Puerto Chacabuco. Aysén is actually the biggest commune in all of Chile when you look at its total area! It was officially founded in 1957.
Who Lives in Aysén? (Population Info)
In 2002, about 22,353 people lived in Aysén. More than half of them were men (11,853) and the rest were women (10,500).
Most people, about 19,580, lived in cities and towns. The remaining 2,773 people lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Aysén grew by about 17%.
How Aysén is Governed
Aysén is managed by a local government called a municipal council. This council is led by an "alcalde," which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.
The people of Aysén also help choose who represents them in Chile's national government. They vote for members of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. These people work in the capital city to make laws for the whole country.
