Puerto Chacabuco is a small town in Chile. It is located in the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region, which is in the southern part of the country. This town sits at the end of the Aisén Fjord, a long, narrow inlet of the sea.
Puerto Chacabuco is very important for its region. It serves as the main port for ships. Many ships stop here on their way to the beautiful Laguna San Rafael National Park. It is also where a ferry service from Puerto Montt ends its journey. The town is known for its factories that process fish and shellfish.

History of Puerto Chacabuco
Why the Port Moved
For a long time, the main port in the Aisén Fjord was a town called Puerto Aisén. However, things changed after a big event in 1991. The Mount Hudson volcano erupted, sending a lot of ash into the air.
This ash, along with soil erosion, made the Aisén River less deep. It became hard for large ships to travel on the river to Puerto Aisén. Because of this, the port had to be moved closer to the coast. That is how Puerto Chacabuco became the new main port.
How Puerto Chacabuco Got Its Name
The town of Puerto Chacabuco is named after a ship. This ship was a corvette called the Chacabuco. In the 1870s, a person named Enrique Simpson used this ship to explore the fjords and islands of the Aysén Region.
The ship itself was named after an important historical event. This was the Battle of Chacabuco, which happened in 1817. This battle was a key moment during the Chilean Independence War, when Chile fought for its freedom.
