Enrique Simpson Baeza (born in Valparaíso, Chile, in 1835 – died in Valparaíso, May 17, 1901) was an important officer in the Chilean Navy. He was also a brave explorer. Simpson is famous for mapping many islands and coastal areas in the Aysén Region of Chile. He did this work in the 1870s while sailing on the corvette Chacabuco.

One of his big achievements was finding San Rafael Lake again. He also realized that Aisén Fjord offered the best way to reach the inner parts of Patagonia from the Pacific Ocean.

Simpson River is named after him, honoring his important work.

A Life of Service

Enrique Simpson Baeza joined the Chilean Navy in 1851. He served for many years, becoming a Counter admiral. This is a very high rank in the navy. He was involved in important events for Chile.

Early Naval Career

Simpson's early years in the navy were busy. He took part in the Revolution of 1859. This was a conflict within Chile. He gained valuable experience during this time.

Explorer and Mapper

In the 1870s, Simpson became a key explorer. He sailed on the Chacabuco corvette. His main job was to map the unknown coasts and islands of the Aysén Region. This area is in southern Chile. His maps were very important for future navigation and settlement.

Discovering San Rafael Lake

During his expeditions, Simpson re-discovered San Rafael Lake. This beautiful lake is known for its glacier. His work helped put this important natural wonder on the map.

Opening up Patagonia

Simpson also understood the importance of Aisén Fjord. He saw that it was the best natural entrance from the Pacific Ocean into the vast region of Patagonia. This insight was crucial for Chile's future development and control of the area.

War of the Pacific

Later in his career, Simpson served in the War of the Pacific. This was a major conflict involving Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. He commanded important ships like the Almirante Cochrane. He also participated in battles, including the Battle of Pisagua.

Legacy

Enrique Simpson Baeza retired from the navy in 1898. He passed away in 1901 in Valparaíso. His work as a hydrographer and explorer left a lasting mark on Chile. The Simpson River is a tribute to his contributions.
