The Simpson River is an important river in Chile. It flows through the beautiful Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region. This river starts in the eastern part of the Andes mountains.

About the Simpson River

The Simpson River is about 88 kilometers (55 miles) long. It carries a lot of water, about 47.2 cubic meters (1,667 cubic feet) every second. The area of land that drains into the river, called its basin, is about 3,712 square kilometers (1,433 square miles).

Where the River Flows

The Simpson River forms the western edge of the city of Coihaique. The Coihaique River, which is a smaller river that flows into the Simpson, borders the city to the north. Further down its path, the Simpson River flows through the Río Simpson National Reserve. This special park is named after the river itself.

Traveling Along the River

Inside the reserve, the river runs close to Route CH-240. This road connects Coihaique with two other towns: Puerto Aisén and Puerto Chacabuco. It's a scenic route for anyone traveling in the area.

Why the Name?

The Simpson River is named after a Chilean navy expert. His name was Enrique Simpson. He was a hydrographer, meaning he mapped out water areas. Enrique Simpson explored this region in the 1870s.

Tributaries

The Blanco River is one of the rivers that flows into the Simpson River. It rushes through deep canyons. These canyons are in the northeastern part of the Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo. The area is amazing to see. It has many canyons made of dark basalt, limestone, shale, and sandstone. You can also see the impressive Cerro Castillo mountain. It is 2,675 meters (8,776 feet) high. Its name means "Castle Hill" because it looks like a medieval castle.
