Discovering Aziak Island

Where is Aziak Island?

Aziak Island is found in the big state of Alaska. It's part of the long chain of islands known as the Aleutian Islands. Specifically, it belongs to the Andreanof Islands group. This area is in the southwestern part of Alaska.

What's in a Name?

The name "Aziak" comes from the Aleut language. The Aleut word ha-azax means "ten." For a long time, before 1920, the name Aziak was sometimes used for a different island. That island was Sledge Island, which is far to the northeast. It was also used for a village on Sledge Island. But as time went on, people started using "Aziak" only for this small island in the Andreanof group.
