Geography of the Islands
The Andreanof Islands are situated between two important passes. To the west, they are near Amchitka Pass and the Rat Islands. To the east, they are close to Amukta Pass and the Islands of Four Mountains.
These islands stretch out for about 275 miles (440 km). All the islands, including a subgroup called the Delarof Islands, cover a total land area of about 1,515 square miles (3,924 square kilometers).
In the year 2000, about 412 people lived on these islands. Most of these people lived in the city of Adak, which is on Adak Island.
Main Islands and Features
The Delarof Islands are a smaller group of islands. They are part of the Andreanof Islands and are the westernmost islands in the group.
Some of the largest islands in this chain, from west to east, include:
- Gareloi Island
- Tanaga Island
- Kanaga
- Adak Island
- Kagalaska Island
- Great Sitkin Island
- Atka Island
- Amlia
- Seguam Island
The Andreanof Islands are often very foggy. They also have no trees. This is because of the strong, almost constant winds that blow across them.
History of the Andreanof Islands
The Andreanof Islands were named after a Russian explorer. His name was Andreyan (Hadrian) Tolstykh. He was the first European to explore these islands in 1761.
During World War II, the United States built several military bases on these islands. The bases on Adak Island were made larger and permanent after the war. However, they were eventually closed down in 1995.
