The Delarof Islands are separated from the rest of the Andreanof Islands. This separation happens by a narrow waterway called Tanaga Pass to the east. To the west, Amchitka and Semisopochnoi islands are separated by Amchitka Pass. Semisopochnoi is the easternmost island of the Rat Islands.

All of these islands are part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge helps protect the wildlife and natural environment. The Delarof Islands together cover a land area of about 63.8 square miles (165.3 square kilometers). No people live on any of these islands.

How They Got Their Name

The Delarof Islands were named in 1836. Captain Fyodor Petrovich Litke of the Imperial Russian Navy gave them their name. He named them after a man called Eustrate Ivanovich Delarof.

Eustrate Ivanovich Delarof was an important person. He was the chief manager of a company called the Shelikhov-Golikov Company. This company was a very early version of the Russian-American Company. He held this position from 1787 to 1791.
