Amlia Island is quite big! It stretches about 46 miles (74 kilometers) long. At its widest point, the island is about 8.7 miles (14 kilometers) across. The total land area of Amlia is 172.1 square miles (445.7 square kilometers). This makes it the 36th largest island in the entire United States.
The island has a very rough and rugged landscape. Its highest point reaches 2021 feet (616 meters) above sea level. Imagine climbing to the top of that!
An Uninhabited Wilderness
One of the most interesting facts about Amlia Island is that it has no permanent residents. This means no people live there all the time. In fact, it is the second-largest uninhabited island in the entire Aleutian Islands chain. This makes it a true wilderness area.
There are also several smaller islands located nearby. These include Agligadak, Sagigik, and Tanadak Island. These islands, like Amlia, are often remote and untouched by human development.
