Aziz Sami Bey Abi-Samim (born 1895 – died 19 July 1984) was an important Iraqi writer and translator. He was born in Kirkuk, which was part of the Ottoman Empire at that time.

He later moved to Istanbul to continue his education. After finishing his studies, he taught in schools across the Ottoman Empire. When the empire ended, he returned to Iraq. Aziz Sami held several government jobs, especially in education. Later, after a big change in government called the 14 July Revolution, he became the head (dean) of the Institute of Fine Arts.

Early Life and Education

Aziz Sami Abi-Samim was born in Kirkuk in 1895. His family worked as carpenters. He moved to Istanbul, a big city, to study at a special school for teachers called the Teachers' House.

His Career and Work

After his studies, Aziz Sami came back to Iraq. He started working as a schoolteacher in September 1926. He later worked for the government in different roles. For example, he was a financial inspector in 1933.

He also worked in the Ministry of Education. In October 1937, he became the Director of Education for the Kirkuk area. Later, he moved to Mosul for another role.

After he retired from government service, he took on a new important job. Following the 14 July Revolution, he was appointed as the dean of the Institute of Fine Arts. This is a place where students learn about art.

Aziz Sami wrote several books. He also translated many books from Turkish into Arabic. Because of his translations, he is known as one of the first people to do scientific translation in the 20th century.

Aziz Sami wrote and translated many interesting books. Here are some of his well-known works:

  • Modern Geography of Iraq, published in 1929. This book helped people learn about Iraq's geography.

Aziz Sami passed away in Baghdad on July 19, 1984. He left behind a legacy as a dedicated writer, translator, and educator in Iraq.
