The Aztec Hotel is a really cool and old building in Monrovia, California. It's famous because it looks like ancient Mayan temples! This special hotel was designed by an architect named Robert Stacy-Judd. It was built way back in 1925-26 along the famous Route 66. The hotel was closed for updates in 2012, and work was still happening in 2014.

The Amazing Aztec Hotel

The Aztec Hotel is a historical landmark in Monrovia. It's a great example of a building style called Mayan Revival architecture. This style brings back the look of ancient Mayan buildings.

What Makes the Aztec Hotel So Unique?

The hotel has a very special design. It mixes ideas from ancient Maya architecture with a modern look called Art Deco. It also has some features from Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. This mix makes it look like no other building!

A Glimpse into Its History

The Aztec Hotel was recognized as a very important historical place. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1978. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a building worth protecting for future generations.

Saving a Piece of History

In 2000, the hotel's owners started working to restore it. They wanted to keep as much of the original design as possible. This project was part of the National Park Service's Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program. Kathie Reece-McNeill led a big renovation of the hotel from 2000 to 2005. She used money and help from the State of California and the National Route 66 Foundation. Experts like Glen Duncan and Joe Catalano also worked on the project.

Featured in Movies!

The Aztec Hotel has even been in a movie! It was shown in the 2009 romantic comedy Spooner. Scenes were filmed right outside the hotel. Many inside shots also showed the lobby, bar, hallways, and even one of the rooms.
