Azzi Jazlyn Fudd (born November 11, 2002) is a talented American college basketball player. She plays for the UConn Huskies team in the Big East Conference. Azzi went to St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C.. There, she was named the top new player in her class by ESPN. She also won several national player of the year awards. As a freshman, Azzi helped UConn reach the national championship game in 2022. Later, as a senior, she led her team to win the national championship in 2025.

Azzi Fudd's High School Basketball Journey

In 2019, Azzi Fudd received a big honor. She was named the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year. This was special because she was the first sophomore ever to win this award. That year, she averaged 26.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. She helped her team achieve an amazing 35 wins and only 1 loss. They also won the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) tournament title.

Before her sophomore year, Azzi made history again. She became one of the first girls to join the SC30 Select Camp. This is a special training camp run by NBA MVP Stephen Curry. At the camp, Azzi won the three-point shooting contest.

Overcoming a Tough Injury

Soon after her successful sophomore season, Azzi faced a challenge. While playing in a 3x3 basketball championship, she injured her right knee. She tore two important ligaments, the ACL and MCL. This type of injury needed two separate surgeries to fix. The first surgery was for the MCL, and the second was for the ACL a few weeks later. Both operations were done by a special surgeon who had also helped her mother with a similar injury years before.

Even while recovering, Azzi showed her determination. She went back to Stephen Curry's camp. Her doctor allowed her to compete in the three-point contest again. But she could only walk between the shooting spots. Despite this, Azzi won the contest once more!

Azzi returned to play for St. John's team in January 2020. She averaged 19.2 points per game while still recovering. Her season was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The next year, St. John's didn't play official games. But Azzi, who was also the student body vice-president, helped arrange unofficial games.

In her senior year, Azzi played an amazing season. She averaged 25.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.2 steals.

Becoming a Top Recruit

Azzi Fudd was a highly sought-after player. She was ranked as the number one recruit in the class of 2021 by ESPN. She even received her first scholarship offer when she was only in sixth grade! That offer came from Maryland.

On November 11, 2020, Azzi announced her big decision. She chose to play for UConn. She picked UConn over many other top schools. These included Maryland, UCLA, and Louisville. Azzi became the 12th number-one recruit to join UConn since 1998. She also joined her best friend, Paige Bueckers, who was also a top recruit.

On February 6, 2022, Azzi made her first start in a college game. It was against rival team Tennessee. She scored a career-high 25 points, along with four rebounds and four assists. She played for 49 minutes, more than anyone else on her team. Azzi finished her freshman year averaging 12.1 points per game.

Sophomore Year (2022-2023)

Azzi started her sophomore season strong on November 10, 2022. She scored 26 points and had 4 assists in a big win against Northeastern. A few days later, on November 14, Azzi set a new career high. She scored 32 points and had four assists in a win against number three ranked Texas. Her 56 points in the first two games set a new UConn record. This record was previously held by basketball legend Diana Taurasi.

On December 4, Azzi faced another challenge. She suffered a right knee injury during a game against Notre Dame. A teammate accidentally fell on her knee. Doctors expected her to miss three to six weeks. Azzi returned on January 11 against St. John's. She scored 15 points in limited playing time. However, she re-injured her knee shortly after returning. This meant she missed more games. While Azzi was out, UConn lost two games in a row for the first time in many years.

Azzi returned again from her injury for the Big East tournament. She scored 10 points in 17 minutes. Despite her return, the UConn Huskies lost to Ohio State in the Sweet Sixteen. Azzi finished her sophomore season averaging 15.1 points per game.

Junior Year (2023-2024)

Azzi began her junior season on November 8, 2023. She scored 13 points, had 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in a win against Dayton. Sadly, on November 22, 2023, it was announced that Azzi had torn her right ACL again during practice. This serious injury meant her season was over.

At the end of the 2025 regular season, Azzi was named to the All-Big East First Team. Her teammates Paige Bueckers and Sarah Strong also received this honor. On March 25, 2025, Azzi announced she would stay at UConn for her final year. She could have entered the WNBA draft, but she chose to stay. On April 6, 2025, Azzi won her first national championship!
