BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra is a special digital radio station from the BBC. It broadcasts across the UK and Republic of Ireland. You can listen to it on digital radio and digital TV. It is not available on old-fashioned analogue radios. You can also listen online, but some events might not be available everywhere.
This station is used when the BBC's main sports channel, BBC Radio 5 Live, is already busy. It provides extra sports commentary so you don't miss any action!

What Sports Does It Cover?
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra covers many exciting sports events.
Baseball World Series
Since 2004, the station has covered Major League Baseball's World Series. This is a big championship series for baseball fans.
Test Match Cricket
It is also the digital home for Test Match Special. This is a famous radio show that gives full commentary on cricket matches. On Sports Extra, you get the commentary without the Shipping Forecast that you hear on Radio 4's long wave coverage.
Wimbledon Tennis
Every year during the Wimbledon tennis tournament, Sports Extra offers extra commentary. This is especially true for the first week of the tournament. The station also provides live coverage of the earlier rounds of other big tennis tournaments called Grand Slams.
How It Started
The station first started broadcasting on 2 February 2002, at 2:30 PM. The very first programme was introduced by Juliette Ferrington. It was a live commentary of a Manchester United versus Sunderland football match.
