History of the BK Stacker
In 2002, Burger King got new owners. These new owners wanted to make the restaurant more popular with a specific group of customers. They focused on young men aged 20-34 who ate fast food often. They called these customers "super fans."
Creating the Stacker Sandwich
To attract these "super fans," Burger King launched the BK Stacker sandwich in late 2006. This new sandwich line offered different sizes. You could get it with one, two, three, or even four hamburger patties. The Stacker was part of a plan to introduce bigger, more filling food items. These new items helped Burger King's sales grow for over four years.
The Stacker sandwich had 1.7 oz (48 g) beef patties. It also included American cheese, bacon, and a special "Stacker sauce." This sauce was a type of Thousand Island dressing. All of this was served on a sesame seed bun.
Public Reaction and Fun Challenges
People had mixed feelings about the Stacker. Some thought the Quad Stacker was a very large burger. Others said it tasted like any other bacon cheeseburger, just with more meat.
Even with mixed reviews, a fun internet trend started. Customers would buy two Quad Stackers. They would then combine them to make an "Octo-Stacker." This giant sandwich had eight patties, eight slices of cheese, and sixteen pieces of bacon. People would film themselves trying to eat the 1 lb (0.45 kg) sandwich very quickly.
Changes Over Time
Around 2008-2009, there was a big economic slowdown called the Great Recession. During this time, Burger King's sales went down. They realized their plan to focus on only "super fans" wasn't working as well.
In 2011, the Stacker sandwiches changed a bit. They removed the top layer of cheese. They also changed the amount of bacon. The sandwiches were moved to the company's value menu, meaning they cost less.
However, these changes made things a bit confusing. For example, two single Stackers for $1.00 each had more cheese and bacon than one double Stacker for $2.00. This meant buying two single Stackers gave you more for your money.
In 2012, Burger King got new owners again. They decided to change the menu to appeal to more people. The original Stacker line was removed. Later, the Stacker sandwiches were brought back. They were given a new name: the "Stacker King" sandwiches. These new versions were like the original ones from 2005-2011. In Canada, you can find both the older "Stacker" and the newer "Stacker King" versions.

Advertising the BK Stacker
When the BK Stacker was first launched, its commercials were very memorable. They featured groups of little people who acted as members of a "Stackers Union." These characters worked in a Burger King kitchen, building the sandwiches. The main slogan was "Meat, Cheese and Bacon- Stacked High." The ads also showed that the sandwich did not have vegetables like lettuce, onions, or tomatoes.
