Grill (cooking) facts for kids
A grill is a cool device used for cooking food, often outdoors! When you use a grill, you're usually roasting food, which means cooking it with dry heat. Some grills use charcoal or wood to make the heat, while others use propane gas.
Using wood or charcoal adds a smoky flavor to your food, which many people love! Gas grills don't add this smoky taste. Some folks prefer one type of grilling, and some enjoy both!
The heat can come from under the food, from above it, or sometimes even from both directions. A barbecue is a common type of grill used for outdoor cooking. It usually heats food from underneath using fuel like coke (a type of fuel) or charcoal. Grilling from above is more common indoors, especially in big professional kitchens.
Grilling in the United States
In the United States, grilling is super popular! There are even "cook-off" competitions where people show off their grilling skills. The most common foods cooked on a grill are steak, burgers, and hot dogs. Grilling is a big part of holidays and celebrations, like 4th of July (America's Independence Day). Most people use a grill more often outdoors during the summer months.
