BPCE stands for Banque Populaire Caisse d'Epargne. It is a very large French banking group. It was created in 2009 when two big banking groups, Groupe Caisse d'Épargne and Groupe Banque Populaire, joined together.

BPCE is one of the biggest banks in France. It is also one of the largest in Europe and in the world. It has over 8,200 branches across France. These branches serve almost 150 million customers.

BPCE also owns a company called Natixis. Natixis used to be a separate company. But in 2021, BPCE took full ownership of it. BPCE is considered a very important bank. This means it is closely watched by the European Central Bank. It is also seen as a bank that is important for the world's financial system.

Before 2022, BPCE and Natixis had their main offices on Avenue Pierre-Mendès-France in Paris.

In 2008 and 2009, the French government helped the banks Caisse d'Épargne, Banque Populaire, and Natixis. They gave them about 7 billion euros. François Pérol, who worked for the President, helped decide how to reorganize these banks.

The new group, called BPCE, was officially formed on July 31, 2009. On that same day, François Pérol became its CEO.

Key Events in BPCE's History

In 2014, BPCE helped a company called Coface become publicly traded. This means people could buy shares of Coface on the stock market. BPCE later sold most of its shares in Coface.

In July 2016, BPCE announced it would buy Fidor Bank. Fidor Bank was a new kind of bank that used technology a lot. However, in November 2018, BPCE decided to sell it again.

In 2018, BPCE sold its banking businesses in Africa. These businesses were sold to a Moroccan bank called BCP Group.

Between 2018 and 2019, BPCE brought all the activities of Crédit Foncier de France into its other operations. They stopped using the Crédit Foncier name.

In July 2021, BPCE bought all the shares of Natixis that it didn't already own. Natixis then stopped being listed on the stock market.

In July 2024, BPCE, through one of its banks, bought a Belgian private bank called Nagelmackers.

On January 21, 2025, BPCE and an Italian insurance company called Generali announced a plan. They decided to create a joint company that would manage money for others. This new company would manage about €1.9 trillion.

In June 2025, BPCE bought a large part of a Portuguese bank called Novo Banco. They bought 75% of it from a company called Lone Star. BPCE plans to buy the remaining 25% from the Portuguese government.

How BPCE Works

Even though the two groups merged in 2009, the local banks of Caisse d'Épargne and Banque Populaire still operate separately. They even compete with each other sometimes. BPCE is fully owned by these local banks. These local banks are owned by their customers, who are like cooperative members.

BPCE offers many services. They provide different types of savings accounts and loans. They help small and medium-sized businesses, craftspeople, and other professionals. They also help people manage their money and offer services for buying homes.

The company also provides insurance products. This includes life insurance and pensions. They offer car and home insurance, health insurance, and other types of protection.
