Hardev Singh (born February 23, 1954 – died May 13, 2016) was a respected spiritual leader from India. Many people also knew him as Nirankari Baba. He led the Sant Nirankari Mission for many years, from 1980 until his passing in 2016.
Early Life and School Days
Hardev Singh was born in Delhi, India, on February 23, 1954. His parents were Gurbachan Singh and Kulwant Kaur.
He went to school in different places. First, he studied at Yadvindra Public School in Patiala, Punjab. Later, he attended Rosary Public School in Sant Nirankari Colony, Delhi. He then went on to graduate from Delhi University.
In 1975, Hardev Singh married Sawinder Kaur. Their wedding took place during a big annual gathering of the Nirankari community in Delhi.
Leading the Sant Nirankari Mission
Hardev Singh became a member of the Nirankari Seva Dal in 1971. This group helps with community service.
In 1980, his father, Gurbachan Singh, who was the leader of the Sant Nirankari Mission, passed away. Hardev Singh then took on the important role of chief leader, also called satguru, for the organization.
In 2005, he helped create the Nirankari Museum. This museum is located in the Sant Nirankari Sarovar complex in New Delhi.
The Sant Nirankari Mission itself was started in 1929 by Baba Buta Singh. He was followed by Avtar Singh as leader. The mission grew a lot after it moved its main base to Delhi in 1947. By 2016, the organization had over 2,000 centers. It also had millions of followers all around the world.
His Passing
Hardev Singh sadly passed away on May 13, 2016. He was in a car accident near Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Many important people in India shared their sadness about his sudden death. These included the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi also expressed their grief.
Hardev Singh was cremated on May 18, 2016, at the Nigambodh Ghat crematorium.
After his passing, his wife, Sawinder Kaur, became the fifth chief leader of the Sant Nirankari Mission on May 17, 2016.
