Baba Padmanji Mule, better known as Baba Padmanji (1831 – 29 August 1906), was an important Indian writer. He was a novelist and religious teacher in the 1800s. He is well-known for his contributions to Marathi literature.
Baba Padmanji became a Christian when he was in his early twenties. He is seen as the founder of Christian literature in the Marathi language. He wrote more than one hundred books. His novel Yamuna Paryatan is considered the first independent social novel in Marathi.
Who Was Baba Padmanji?
Baba Padmanji was born in May 1831 in Belgaum, which is now in Karnataka. His family spoke both Konkani and Marathi.
His Early Life and Education
He went to a Christian missionary school in his hometown. There, he became very interested in Christianity. In 1849, he continued his studies at the Wilson School in Bombay.
Later, Baba worked as a teacher at the Free Church High School in Bombay. He taught about Christian beliefs and other related subjects.
His Work as a Writer and Preacher
Baba Padmanji had mentors like Murray Mitchell and John Wilson. In 1867, he became a Pastor at the Free Church. He served the Free Church in Pune until 1872.
He also owned a printing press in Bombay called Victoria Press. He managed several Christian newspapers and magazines. He wrote over 100 Marathi books about Christian topics.
In 1877, he became famous for a special project. He helped create the first translation of the Bible's New Testament with comments from Indian Christians.
Baba Padmanji passed away on August 29, 1906. He was buried in the Christian cemetery in Sewri, Bombay.
