Baba Sissoko (born March 8, 1963) is a talented musician from Mali, a country in West Africa. He is best known for playing percussion instruments, especially the tamani.

Baba Sissoko's Musical Journey
Baba Sissoko grew up in Bamako, the capital city of Mali. From a young age, he played the tamani, a special drum that can "talk." He often played alongside traditional female griots. Griots are like storytellers and musicians who keep history and traditions alive through songs. Baba played at weddings and other important ceremonies.
Early Career and Collaborations
In 1985, Baba Sissoko began touring internationally. He joined the famous Instrumental Ensemble of Mali orchestra. With them, he played the tamani and the ngoni, another traditional African instrument.
In 1991, Baba Sissoko started his own group called Baba Sissoko & Taman Kan. He began working with many top Malian artists and international musicians. A very important collaboration was with Habib Koité, a well-known Malian guitarist. They worked together for 12 years, and their music was loved by many. In 1995, Baba Sissoko released his first album with his band, Tama-Kan.
The Taman Kan Band
Baba Sissoko's Taman Kan band includes talented musicians. Roger Sabal Lecco plays bass. He has worked with famous artists like Manu Dibango and Miriam Makeba. Reynaldo Hernandez plays percussion. He has performed with the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional of Cuba and the Gipsy Kings.
Together, the trio celebrates their rich African cultures. These include the Manding, Bambara people, Sonrai, Yoruba, and Kongo traditions. They also mix in sounds from blues, jazz, and rock music.
Teaching and Later Works
Baba Sissoko has recorded and released more than five albums. He has also shared his knowledge by teaching traditional drumming in Brussels, Belgium. He has given talks at the University of Calabria in Italy about art and music. Since the late 1990s, Baba Sissoko has lived in Italy.
In 2015, he worked with DJ Khalab on an album called Khalab & Baba. Two years later, in 2017, he collaborated with Mighty Mo Rodgers on the album Griot Blues.
