Babek (sometimes spelled Babak) is a special area in Azerbaijan. It's like a district or region. This area is part of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which is a separate part of Azerbaijan.
Babek surrounds, but does not include, the main city called Nakhchivan City. Long ago, this area was also called Nakhchivan. It was later renamed in honor of a famous historical figure named Babak Khorramdin. He was a leader who fought for 23 years against a big empire called the Abbasid Empire in Iran.
About Babek
Babek is located in the western part of Azerbaijan. It covers an area of about 1,170 square kilometers. That's roughly the size of a small country! In 1999, about 71,400 people lived there.
This region is known for its interesting history and its connection to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Being an "autonomous republic" means it has some self-governing powers, even though it's part of Azerbaijan.
The Name Babek
The name "Babek" comes from a brave leader named Babak Khorramdin. He lived a long time ago, in the 9th century. Babak led a big uprising against the Abbasid Caliphate. This was a powerful empire that ruled over a large area. Babak fought for many years to protect his people and their beliefs. Renaming the region after him honors his legacy and his fight for freedom.
