Backergunje facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Backergunje, also known as Bakarganj, was once a district in British India. It was part of the Dacca division in Eastern Bengal and Assam. Today, most of this area is located in Bangladesh. In 1901, about 2.3 million people lived there.

This district was mostly flat land. It had many areas with bamboo and betelnut trees. Dark, slow-moving streams flowed through the region. There were no hills at all in the entire district.

Rivers

The most important rivers in the Backergunje district were the Meghna, the Arial Khan, and the Haringhata (also called Baleswar). The Haringhata, Baleswar, Madhumati, and Garai were actually different names for the same river. People could easily travel all over the district by boat using these waterways.

People

Small trading villages were found throughout the district. Each area also held special fairs where people could trade goods. The people living in Backergunje were generally well-off. They owned land and could grow enough rice to feed their families. Because of this, it was often difficult to find people available for hire.
