Badra Zurabovich Gunba (Abkhaz: Бадра Зураб-иԥа Гәынба; Russian: Бадра Зурабович Гунба; born 14 August 1982) is a politician from Abkhazia. He is currently serving as the acting President of Abkhazia.
Before becoming president, he held important roles in the government. He was the Minister for Culture from 2011 to 2014.
Early Career and Education
Badra Gunba was born on 14 August 1982. He has a strong educational background. He earned a degree in accounting and auditing. He also holds a doctorate in economic sciences. This means he studied how countries manage their money and resources.
In 2011, Alexander Ankvab became the new President of Abkhazia. President Ankvab chose Badra Gunba to be the Minister for Culture. In this role, Gunba was in charge of protecting Abkhazia's history and cultural sites. He served in this position until 2014. After some political changes, Elvira Arsalia took over as the new Minister for Culture.
Becoming Vice President
In 2020, Badra Gunba ran for Vice President of Abkhazia. He was the running mate for Aslan Bzhania in the presidential elections. A running mate is a candidate who runs together with another candidate as a team. They won the election, and Badra Gunba became the Vice President.
Serving as Acting President
On 19 November 2024, Badra Gunba became the acting President of Abkhazia. This happened after Aslan Bzhania resigned from his position as president. Bzhania's resignation followed protests in Abkhazia. When a president resigns, the vice president often steps in as acting president.
After becoming acting president, Badra Gunba decided to run for president himself. He was a candidate in the 2025 Abkhazian presidential election. Many believed he was the candidate that Russia supported the most.
In the first round of the election, Badra Gunba received 47% of the votes. This meant he advanced to a second round, called a runoff election. In a runoff, the top two candidates from the first round compete again. He faced Adgur Ardzinba in this runoff. On 1 March, Badra Gunba won the second round with 55% of the votes.
