Baeturia, also known as Beturia or Turdetania, was an important region in the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Today, this area is part of modern Spain. It was located between two major rivers: the Guadiana and the Guadalquivir.
Who Lived in Baeturia?
During the Iron Age, which was a long time ago, different groups of people lived in Baeturia. Two of the main groups were the Celts and the Turdetani.
- The Celts were a group of people who lived across much of Europe. They had their own unique culture, language, and traditions.
- The Turdetani were a specific group of people who lived mainly in this southern part of the Iberian Peninsula. They were known for their advanced culture and their own written language, which was quite unique for the time. They were also skilled in farming and trade.
How Baeturia Became Part of Rome
Over time, the powerful Roman Republic began to expand its control across many lands. In the 2nd century BCE (which means more than 2,100 years ago), the Romans conquered the territory of Baeturia. This was a big change for the people living there, as they became part of the vast Roman Empire. The Romans brought their own laws, language (Latin), and way of life to the region, which later became known as Hispania Baetica.
