Bahruz Kangarli was an amazing Azerbaijani artist. He was born in Nakhchivan on January 22, 1892, and passed away there on February 7, 1922. He was one of the very first professional artists in Azerbaijan. People remember him as the founder of realistic painting in his country.

Life and Art of Bahruz Kangarli
Early Life and Education
Bahruz Kangarli was born in Nakhchivan on January 22, 1892. When he was a child, he became hard of hearing because of an illness. This meant he couldn't go to a regular school. Instead, he learned everything at home.
In 1910, he traveled to Tiflis. He went there with help from Jalil Mammadguluzadeh. Bahruz joined the Tiflis School of Arts. Famous teachers like Otto Schmerling taught there. While studying, Bahruz painted portraits of his teachers and friends.
Becoming a Professional Artist
Before the revolution, many magazines in Russia published his art. His work appeared in Molla Nasraddin magazine. This magazine was published in Baku. Kangarli was inspired by artists like Azim Azimzade. After finishing art school in 1916, he returned to Nakhchivan.
Painting Nature and People
Bahruz Kangarli loved painting landscapes. He created many beautiful watercolor pictures of his homeland. Some of these paintings show "Waterfall" and "Agridag". He also painted "The road in Yakhshan village". "Ilanly mountain under the moonlight" and "Spring" are other examples. He even painted the "Russian church in Nakhchivan".
He also painted famous cultural places. These include "Momine Khatun Mausoleum" and "Ashabi-kahf Mountain". He also painted "Prophet Noah's grave".
Art for the Stage
Kangarli also designed art for plays. He made costume sketches for plays like The Deadmen. This play was by Jalil Mammadguluzade. He also worked on Haji Gara and Pari-jadu. These works are great examples of Azerbaijani art from that time.
Portraits and "Refugees" Series
Bahruz Kangarli painted many portraits of people. He painted "An old man" and "A Georgian". He also created a special series of paintings called "Refugees". This series showed people who had lost their homes. It included paintings like "Refugee-lady" and "Homeless family".
Exhibitions and Legacy
Kangarli had an album called "Memories of Nakhchivan". It has 20 of his beautiful landscape paintings. This album is now kept at the Azerbaijan State Museum of Art. He used to hold art shows in his own house. Everyone could come and see his paintings for free.
In 1921, Kangarli had a big art exhibition. He showed over 500 of his artworks. He donated a lot of the money he earned to an orphanage. Bahruz Kangarli created more than 2000 artworks. He did all this in just seven years of his short life.
On May 22, 2007, a museum was opened in his home in Nakhchivan. A monument was also placed on his grave.
