Bailey Brown (born June 16, 1917, died October 6, 2004) was an important judge in the United States. He served as a judge on two different federal courts. First, he was a judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. Later, he became a judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Early Life and Education
Bailey Brown was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1917. He went to the University of Michigan and earned a degree in 1939. After that, he studied law at Harvard Law School, finishing in 1942.
During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. After the war, he worked as a lawyer in Memphis from 1946 until 1961.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy chose Bailey Brown to be a judge. He was nominated for a new judge position on the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. The United States Senate approved his nomination on August 21, 1961. He officially became a judge on that same day.
From 1966 to 1979, Judge Brown served as the Chief Judge for this court. His time on this court ended on September 26, 1979, when he was promoted to a higher court.
Serving on the Court of Appeals
President Jimmy Carter nominated Judge Brown for a new role on March 15, 1979. He was chosen to be a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. This court hears appeals from district courts. The Senate confirmed his appointment on September 25, 1979. He began his service on this court the next day, September 26, 1979.
On June 16, 1982, Judge Brown took on "senior status". This means he continued to work as a judge but with a reduced workload. He retired completely on December 31, 1997.
Later Life and Death
Bailey Brown passed away on October 6, 2004, in Memphis, Tennessee.
