The Bailey Sweet apple is a special type, or cultivar, of domesticated apple. It is also known as Bailey's Sweet or simply Bailey. These apples were first grown around 1840. They came from a place called Petty in Wyoming County, New York State, in the United States. Other names for this apple have included Edgerly Sweet, Howard's Sweet, and Paterson's Sweet.
What Does a Bailey Sweet Apple Look Like?
Bailey Sweet apples are usually medium to large in size. They are often round, like a sphere. Sometimes, they can be a bit cone-shaped. The skin of the apple is red. Inside, the flesh is yellowish and feels crisp when you bite into it.
How Does the Bailey Sweet Apple Taste?
Bailey Sweet apples are best for eating fresh. They are not usually used for cooking. The inside of the apple is very juicy. It has a "distinctly sweet" flavor. You can find these apples in season from October. They usually last until January or February.
Can You Grow Bailey Sweet Apples?
Growing Bailey Sweet apples can be a bit tricky. It is not always recommended for new growers. The apple trees usually produce many apples. However, if they are not sprayed with special treatments, many fruits might not be very good quality. These trees can also get sick easily.
Sometimes, the apples can look "scabby and knotty" in certain areas. This means they might have rough spots on their skin. Also, Bailey Sweet apples generally do not stay fresh for a long time after they are picked.
