The Story Behind Baileys Harbor
The town of Baileys Harbor got its name from an interesting event. Back in 1848, a ship captain named Bailey was sailing on the Great Lakes. He got caught in a very bad storm that he didn't expect. Luckily, he found a safe place to hide his ship in the harbor. That's how the area became known as Baileys Harbor.
Before it was called Baileys Harbor, the area had another name: Gibraltar. Native American people had their own name for the harbor, which was "Ah-quah-o-me-ning." This name means "Fish go to shore," which tells us a lot about how important fishing was there.
Where is Baileys Harbor Located?
Baileys Harbor is a unique place because a lot of it is covered by water! The town has a total area of about 68.8 square miles (178.1 square kilometers). But out of that, only about 29.5 square miles (76.5 square kilometers) is land. The rest, a big 39.2 square miles (101.6 square kilometers), is water. This means more than half of the town's area is water!
