History of Baird
How Baird Got Its Name
Baird was named after a person called John Rupert Baird. He used to own the land where the community is located today. It's common for places to be named after important people who lived there or owned land.
The Railroad Connection
Back in the early 1900s, Baird was an important stop for trains. There was a train station here for the Southern Railway. This railway line used to cross the entire state, connecting cities like Columbus and Greenville.
Today, the train tracks in Baird are still active. They are now owned and operated by the Columbus and Greenville Railway. However, the line doesn't go as far as it used to. It now ends in a place called Greenwood.
