Baird Island facts for kids
Baird Island is a small, special island located in the Piper Islands National Park in Queensland, Australia. It's part of the amazing Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
You can find it in Temple Bay, which is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Kutini-Payamu National Park and Lockhart River. It's also about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Cape Grenville.
Even though it's small, only about 2 hectares (5 acres) in size, Baird Island is super important for birds!
A Special Home for Birds
Baird Island, along with its nearby neighbors like Beesley, Farmer, and Fisher Islands, forms a very important area called the Piper Islands Important Bird Area.
Why is it an Important Bird Area?
This area has been identified by BirdLife International as a key place because it's a breeding ground for two amazing types of birds:
- Pied Imperial Pigeons: These beautiful black and white pigeons come to the island to build their nests and raise their young.
- Black Noddies: These small, dark seabirds also choose Baird Island as a safe place to lay their eggs and care for their chicks.
It's a protected spot where these birds can thrive and help keep their populations strong!
