The Baker River is a big river in Chile. It is found in the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region, which is part of Patagonia. This river is special because it carries the most water of any river in Chile.
The Baker River starts from Bertrand Lake. This lake gets its water from General Carrera Lake. The river flows for about 170 kilometers (105 miles). It runs along the eastern side of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. Finally, it flows into the Pacific Ocean near a town called Caleta Tortel.
When the Baker River reaches the ocean, it splits into two main parts. This is called a delta. Only the northern part of the delta is easy to travel on by boat. The river has a beautiful turquoise-blue color. This color comes from tiny bits of rock and dirt left behind by glaciers.
For a long time, there was a plan to build a very large dam project on the Baker River. This project was called HidroAysén. It would have included five big dams. Many people and environmental groups did not want these dams built. They wanted to protect the river and its natural beauty. In June 2014, the Chilean government decided to stop the HidroAysén dam project. This means the Baker River can continue to flow freely.
