Exploring Bakersville's Past
Bakersville is an old community located where two important roads met. One road went from east to west, and the other went from north to south. This area was once known as Carey's Crossroads, named after a landowner named George Carey.
Early Settlers and Community Life
Many German families settled in this part of Washington County during the 1700s. These immigrants had different Christian beliefs. Around 1800, they decided to work together. They built a shared church, called a "union meeting house," where different groups like Lutherans, German Reformed, and Methodists could worship. George Carey gave the land for this church and a graveyard.
Growing Community and New Buildings
By 1823, the community had grown, and the first log church was too small. So, they built a bigger stone church and a schoolhouse. As more people moved to Bakersville, the different church groups grew even larger. By 1854, they were big enough to have their own separate churches. That's when Salem Lutheran Church was built, and it still stands today.
What Bakersville Used to Be Like
The cemetery at Salem Lutheran Church is where many of the first people who lived in Bakersville are buried. In the past, Bakersville was a busy little village. It had important places like a general store, a post office, a doctor's office, and a grist mill (a mill for grinding grain). Records from the 1800s show that many people who worked on the C&O Canal (a famous waterway) lived in or near Bakersville.
Bakersville Today
Today, Bakersville is much quieter. The Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church and its cemetery are still there. You can also see several older homes that show what the village looked like long ago.
