Baldwin was started in 1871 by a person named Dana Reed Bailey. At first, it had a different name: "Clarksville." This name came from its train station. Later, the town was renamed Baldwin. It got its new name from D. A. Baldwin. He was the manager of the Western Wisconsin Railroad. He helped bring the railroad right through the town.
