Balhinch is a small community in Indiana, USA. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's part of a larger area called Union Township, located in Montgomery County, Indiana. Balhinch is about two miles wide and includes interesting places like Rattlesnake Canyon and Weir Cemetery.

A Look Back: Balhinch's History

Balhinch has a long history! The first person to settle in this area was a man named William Offield. He arrived in February 1821. This was about five miles southwest of Crawfordsville. The area was a good place to settle because it had two streams: Sugar Creek and Rattlesnake Creek.

Today, you can find a monument dedicated to William Offield near Rattlesnake Creek. This monument helps remember his important role in the early days of Balhinch.

Later, in the 1920s, the community was officially "platted." This means its exact boundaries were drawn on a map and legally defined.

Famous Faces: Notable People

Balhinch is also known as the home of Caroline Virginia Krout. She was a talented author.
