About the Balicassiao
What Does It Look Like?
The balicassiao is a medium-sized bird. Both male and female birds look very similar.
Some balicassiao birds are completely black. Others have a white lower chest and belly. Their size and color can be a bit different depending on where they live in the Philippines.
Where Does It Live?
This bird loves to live in warm, wet places. Its favorite home is in the lowland forests. These are forests that are not very high up in the mountains. They are often found in tropical or subtropical areas.
How It Got Its Name
The balicassiao got its scientific name, Dicrurus balicassius, a long time ago. In 1766, a famous Swedish scientist named Carl Linnaeus gave it this name. He used the name Corvus balicassius at first.
The word balicassius comes from the Cebuano word "Balicasiao." This is what people in the Philippines call this bird. So, its name actually comes from the local language!
Later, the bird was placed in the Dicrurus group. This group was created by a French bird expert, Louis Pierre Vieillot, in 1816.
