Welcome to Balingup

Balingup is a small, friendly town known for its beautiful scenery. It's a great place to visit if you enjoy nature and local events. The town is located on the South Western Highway, making it easy to reach.

What's in a Name?

The name Balingup comes from Balingup Pool. This pool is on the Balingup Brook, which flows right through the town. A surveyor first wrote down the name in 1850.

Some people believe the name comes from Balingan, a Noongar warrior. The Noongar people are the traditional owners of this land. Other research suggests the name means "one that is situated there at this place" in the Noongar language.

A Bit of History

Balingup was officially established in 1898. In the same year, a railway station opened in the town. This station was part of the Northcliffe Branch railway. The railway helped the town grow by connecting it to other areas.

For many years, Balingup was known for growing fruits and vegetables. More recently, the town has become known for raising beef cattle. It also produces many organic foods. There are also two long-standing religious communities in the area.

Fun Things to Do

Balingup hosts several exciting events each year. These festivals bring the community together and attract visitors.

  • Small Farm Field Day: This event takes place in late April. It's a chance to learn about farming and see local produce.
  • Medieval Carnivale: Held in August, this festival is a big highlight. You can experience what life might have been like in medieval times.

Balingup is also special because the famous Bibbulmun Track passes through it. This long walking trail stretches across Western Australia. Hikers from all over the world enjoy walking parts of this track.

Nature and Challenges

The area around Balingup is very natural and beautiful. However, like many parts of Australia, it can experience bushfires. In 2013, a large bushfire affected the area. It caused damage to the historic Southampton homestead.
