History of the Ballyedmonduff Wedge Tomb
This ancient tomb was built a very long time ago, around 1700 BC. This was during the Bronze Age, a time when people started using bronze to make tools and weapons. For many years, the tomb was hidden in a small clearing within a planted forest. However, the trees around it were cut down in 2020.
What was found at the tomb?
Archaeologists, who are like history detectives, explored the tomb twice. They first dug here in the 1830s and then again in the 1940s. During these digs, they found some interesting things. They discovered cremated bone, which means human remains that had been burned. They also found a smooth stone hammer, sharp flint tools, and pieces of pottery. These items help us learn about the people who lived here thousands of years ago.
How is the tomb built?
The Ballyedmonduff Wedge Tomb has a unique shape. It looks like a "U" and has double walls, which means it has two layers of stone walls. Inside, the main rectangular room, called a chamber, is divided into three separate parts. This design is typical of wedge tombs from the Bronze Age.
