Baltimore was once a small town in Indiana, located right next to the Wabash River. Today, it's known as a ghost town, which means it's a place where most people have moved away, and not much is left.
The Story of Baltimore
Baltimore was started in November 1829. It was founded by two people named William Willmeth and Samuel Hill.
Early Growth
For a few years, the town grew! About 70 people lived there. In 1830, one of the founders, Samuel Hill, had a big store with many goods. It was the largest store in the whole county back then.
The town even got its own post office in 1833. It helped people send and receive letters for many years. The post office stayed open until 1865. Another store was opened in 1839 by Samuel Wetzel.
Why the Town Shrank
But things changed in the 1840s. A big canal, called the Wabash and Erie Canal, was finished. This canal was built on the other side of the river. This made other towns along the canal grow, but it made Baltimore less important. People started to move away.
Today, almost nothing is left of old Baltimore. There's only one brick house, built in the 1880s, that still stands.
Where Was Baltimore?
Baltimore was located in Indiana, close to a road called State Road 263. It was near where State Road 263 meets County Road 1025 South.
Two cemeteries, Baltimore Cemetery and Rodgers Cemetery, are about a quarter mile west of where the town used to be.
