What the Movie is About
Balto's Family and Aleu's Journey
About a year after Balto's brave adventure, he and Jenna have six puppies in Alaska. Most of the puppies look like their husky mother. But one pup, named Aleu, looks more like her wolfdog father, Balto.
When the puppies are eight weeks old, new families adopt five of them. However, no one wants Aleu because she looks too much like a wild wolf. So, she stays with Balto. A year later, Aleu is almost shot by a hunter who thinks she is a wild wolf. Balto then tells Aleu the truth about her wolf heritage. This makes Aleu upset, and she runs away to find her own place in the world.
Balto goes into the Alaskan wilderness to find her. At the same time, Balto has been having strange dreams. He sees a raven and a pack of wolves in his dreams. He doesn't understand what they mean. Balto decides he must find the meaning of these dreams while searching for Aleu. His friends Boris, Muk, and Luk try to join him. But something stops them, and they realize this journey is only for Balto and Aleu.
Aleu Meets Muru
Aleu finds shelter in a cave. There, she meets a field mouse named Muru. Muru tells Aleu that she shouldn't be ashamed of her wolf side. He explains that her family history tells her what she is, but not who she is. Muru reveals he is Aleu's spirit guide. He tells her to go on a journey to discover herself.
Balto and Aleu find each other and make up. They travel to the ocean. There, a group of hungry wolves attacks them. These wolves are led by Niju, a mean and proud wolf.
The Wolf Pack and a New Leader
The fight stops when an old wolf named Nava arrives. Nava is the true leader of the pack. He welcomes Balto and Aleu. Nava tells his pack that the wolf spirit Aniu has spoken to him in dreams. Aniu told him that the caribou (a type of deer) they eat have moved across the ocean. They will not come back. Aniu also said that a new leader will soon guide the pack. This leader will be "the one who is a wolf but does not know."
Nava believes that Balto, who is half wolf, is the chosen one Aniu spoke about. But Niju refuses to leave his home. He takes control of the pack. Niju plans to steal food from other animal groups to survive the winter.
The Ice Bridge and Aleu's Destiny
Aleu has a dream where she sees the caribou crossing a bridge made of ice. The next morning, Niju is about to lead an attack on another animal group. But Balto stops him. Just then, many ice floes in the ocean come together to form a bridge.
Balto then leads the wolf pack across the ice bridge. Nava falls behind because he is old. Aleu tries to help Nava, but Niju attacks. Balto goes back to save them, leaving the pack without a leader. Nava is too old to cross the ice. Balto tells Niju to go lead the pack. But Niju is too scared to leave his home and goes back to the shore.
Balto gets ready to go to the pack. But Aleu realizes her true place is to lead the pack, just as Nava predicted. Balto and Aleu say goodbye. Aleu then rejoins the pack and becomes their new leader. Back on shore, Nava says goodbye to Balto. He then goes to find Niju so they can survive together. The raven appears to Balto again. It changes into Aniu, revealing she is Balto's mother. Balto then starts his journey home.
